3-MCPD: Wilmar Turns to Biotechnology for Solution

Sandakan, 14 August 2018 Wilmar International & BPP/Agraria today piloted their Nano-Particle Lipid Ester technology at a Palm Oil Mill in Sabah, East Malaysia.

The technology, SPECTRA™, is synthesised wholly from Palm Oil and works by cleaning crude CPO of 3-MCPD precursors - Chloride, Phosphorus & Glycidyl Esters (GE) GE and 3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane1,2 diol) are the food processing contaminants classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possible human carcinogens.

The technology invented by Dr. Thavalingam was formulated to enhance the oil and water separation in the milling process by de-emulsifying the third layer in the Clarification Tanks. Tests showed that an effect of the process had been to eliminate GE to non-detectable levels and drastically reduce chloride and other contaminants in the oil as well as reducing the Free Fatty Acid (FFA) levels in CPO.
